Company of Heroes 3 Final Stand — Roguelite Wave Defense
Now live on Steam — survive 12 escalating waves, 36 bosses, five battlegrounds, and Endless Mode.
Final Stand is Company of Heroes 3’s standalone roguelite wave-defense mode, now live since July 29, 2026 on Steam app 4836540 alongside patch 2.5.0 for the base game. Final Stand does not require owning Company of Heroes 3 — it is a separate purchase at approximately $29.99, with a bundle discount for existing CoH3 owners on app 1677280. Instead of territory control against human opponents, you defend a position against 12 escalating waves of enemies culminating in boss encounters, earning progression currency to unlock faction progression trees between runs.
Standalone access and pricing
Final Stand ships as its own Steam product (4836540), not as DLC locked behind the base game. New players can discover the Company of Heroes combat loop through horde mode without buying CoH3 first. Launch pricing is approximately $29.99 USD / £23.99 GBP / €28.99 EUR, with a 10% launch-period discount and an additional 20% bundle discount for existing CoH3 owners — verify current regional Steam pricing on the store page.
Installing Final Stand does not automatically patch CoH3 ranked multiplayer. Base-game owners still need patch 2.5.0 via app 1677280 for ranked map and balance updates. Read Patch 2.5.0 for companion patch details and Final Stand Builds for faction loadouts.
What is Final Stand?
Final Stand strips away the strategic map and ranked ladder, focusing on:
- Wave survival — enemy intensity increases each wave until wave 12 and boss fights
- Roguelite progression — meta-unlocks persist between runs across sessions via faction progression trees
- Faction identity — US Forces, British Forces, Wehrmacht, and Afrikakorps each offer distinct defensive tools
- Eight difficulty levels — scale from onboarding to extreme challenge
- Five battlegrounds at launch — distinct maps with different choke layouts and event pacing
- Endless Mode — continue past wave 12 for leaderboard chasing and stress testing
- 2-player co-op — coordinate abilities and lane defense with a partner
- Roguelite run building — after each wave, choose randomized units or abilities that persist for the run
- 36 boss units with special abilities and rewards
- 18 dynamic battlefield events — Goliath raids, smoke ambushes, and wave-to-wave surprises
If you are new to Company of Heroes entirely, complete Getting Started and Cover and Combat before Final Stand — horde modes punish bad cover instantly. Practical loadouts: Final Stand Builds. Ranked players should also read Multiplayer Maps for 2.5.0 map changes.
Wave structure and pacing
Expect 12 main waves with difficulty spikes at mid-game (waves 5–7) and pre-boss rushes (waves 10–11). Boss waves demand Munitions abilities and coordinated retreats — mechanics from Resource Management apply, but income may be wave-based rather than territory-based.
General pacing strategy:
- Waves 1–3: Establish control groups, identify choke points, spend lightly
- Waves 4–7: Upgrade key squads, lay mines or emplacements if available, save one artillery ability for wave 7 spike
- Waves 8–11: Full Munitions spend — hoarding loses runs here
- Wave 12 / Boss: Execute pre-planned ability rotation; retreat wounded vet squads rather than donate them to boss AoE
Endless Mode continues past wave 12 — enemy scaling intensifies and rewards players who mastered the standard run. Treat Endless as endgame content after clearing all five battlegrounds.
Battlegrounds and variety
Launch includes five battlegrounds — each with unique terrain that favors different faction tools. Wide maps reward mobile Afrikakorps vehicle clears; choke-heavy maps elevate British Forces emplacements. Replay each battleground with different factions to unlock full faction progression trees.
Update 3.0 (later 2026) adds a sixth battleground per 2026 Roadmap — bookmark Updates for confirmation.
Faction progression trees
Between runs, faction progression trees unlock modifiers, starting bonuses, and ability upgrades per faction. Unlike ranked battlegroups from Dare & Destroy, Final Stand progression is mode-specific — investing in US Forces horde unlocks does not transfer to multiplayer loadouts.
Strategy: pick one faction and invest ten runs before switching. Failed runs still grant partial currency — experiment without fear after your main faction tree is established.
Co-op 2-player
Final Stand supports 2-player co-op — assign lanes, split Munitions abilities, and coordinate boss-phase retreats. Co-op rewards complementary factions: British emplacement anchor plus US flexible cleanup is a common pairing. Communicate ability cooldowns — double-spending artillery on the same wave wastes Munitions.
Faction choice in Final Stand
Each faction’s defensive identity translates differently to horde defense:
| Faction | Final Stand strength |
|---|---|
| US Forces | Flexible response, strong combined arms cleanup |
| British Forces | Emplacements, artillery, defensive choke holding |
| Wehrmacht | Aggressive counter-pushes between waves |
| Afrikakorps | Mobile vehicle clears after defensive holds |
Use the Faction Picker if undecided, then specialize one faction for meta-unlock efficiency.
Battlegroups and loadouts
Standard multiplayer battlegroups may appear with Final Stand-specific modifiers — watch Tier List: Battlegroups and Balance & Meta post-launch for horde-tier rankings. Prioritize:
- Area denial — mines, MG emplacements, artillery
- Smoke and suppression — control horde density
- Anti-armor — boss waves often introduce vehicle threats
Roguelite between-wave choices (upgrades, reinforcements, ability picks) resemble deck decisions — choose options that synergize with your existing composition rather than one-off power spikes.
Boss encounters
Boss fights test everything learned in waves 1–11:
- Identify boss damage zones — red ground indicators mirror Cover and Combat telegraphs
- Save retreat (R) for emergency vet preservation — meta progression rewards squad survival across waves when rules allow
- Coordinate battlegroup abilities — Ctrl+F4–F11 per Controls — in burst windows when bosses channel attacks

Patch 2.5.0 synergy
Final Stand launched alongside patch 2.5.0 — ranked balance, new maps, lobby refresh, and anti-blobbing tuning for base CoH3. Final Stand benefits from shared engine fixes even though horde rules differ from ranked. CoH3 owners updating for ranked should install both products. See Patch 2.5.0 for ranked prep checklist.
Hot Fix 2.5.2 (July 31) added Steam Cloud uploads for Perk progression and AI fixes — see Hot Fix 2.5.2 if perk unlocks fail to sync between PCs.
Hot Fix 2.5.1 and 2.5.2 — co-op lobby and cloud perks
Relic shipped Hot Fix 2.5.1 (July 30) and Hot Fix 2.5.2 (July 31) within 48 hours of launch. 2.5.1 added the Browse Games co-op lobby list, map and difficulty preview, public and private lobby creation, and missing localization strings — not cloud saves. 2.5.2 is the current build — Steam Cloud Perk save data for cross-PC progression, AI HMG and vehicle fixes, Qattara map hole patch, and crash fixes without reverting 2.5.0 balance.
Before co-op sessions:
- Verify Final Stand app 4836540 shows build 2.5.2 in the main menu
- Use Browse Games from the main menu to find or host co-op (added in 2.5.1) — details on Hot Fix 2.5.1
- Confirm Steam Cloud perk saves enabled in Steam settings if you switch PCs — fixed in 2.5.2
Full hotfix details: Hot Fix 2.5.2 and Hot Fix 2.5.1. Ranked players on base CoH3 should also update app 1677280 to the same build floor.
First-run checklist
