Company of Heroes 3 Controls & Hotkeys

Mastering Company of Heroes 3 controls separates players who react from players who orchestrate. This page documents default PC hotkeys used across skirmish, campaign, multiplayer, and Final Stand — verify bindings in game settings after patches 2.4.0 and 2.5.0. For rebinding advice see Keybinds.

Movement and combat

Retreat (R) is the most underused key for newcomers — read Cover and Combat for when to retreat vs hold.

Control groups

Full guide: Unit Control Groups. Assign groups before first contact in ranked — multiplayer has no pause.

Buildings and production

Building slot 2F2

Exact building mapping depends on faction and UI layout — Builds reference F-keys in build orders. Queue production while managing fights using groups.

Battlegroups

ActionKey
Battlegroup ability slotsCtrl + F4–F11

Battlegroup abilities consume Munitions and cooldowns — fire before contact per Tier List: Battlegroups. Do not confuse with unit control groups.

Faction-specific reminders

All four factions share control scheme — US Forces, British Forces, Wehrmacht, Afrikakorps. Vehicle factions (DAK) stress reverse bindings more than infantry-only openers.

Campaign and co-op

Tactical Pause (Space) available in campaign and skirmish — Italian Campaign Tips benefit from pause planning. Transition off pause before Multiplayer Basics ranked.

Learning path

  1. Memorize R, Ctrl+1–3, F1–F3, M
  2. Add Ctrl+F4–F11 when battlegroup selected
  3. Drill in How to Beat AI skirmish
  4. Customize per Keybinds

Controls are muscle memory — ten intentional games with focus on hotkeys beats hundred autopilot matches.

Production queue while fighting

Advanced players queue next squad while microing fight with other group — tab select via number keys, shift-queue production, return to fight. Buildings F1–F3 should rarely idle; if they do, you are over-microing one front. Balance is core CoH3 skill between Unit Control Groups and economy.

Minimap habit

Bind eyes to minimap every ten seconds — Fuel contests and cut-offs appear there before main screen. M tactical map supplements minimap for long pathing; do not confuse the two during panic moments.

Additional Company of Heroes 3 notes

Relic continues supporting Company of Heroes 3 through Steam app 1677280 with balance patches and new modes including Final Stand around July 29, 2026. Cross-link mechanics guides — Getting Started, Resource Management, Cover and Combat — with Updates whenever a patch changes timings you rely on. Community ladder improvement comes from repeating one build ten times, reviewing one mistake per loss, and verifying Controls hotkeys stay consistent across play sessions. Review Tier List after each major patch, drill openings in Build Order Planner, and queue ranked only when Hard AI results prove your build order—not luck—carries matches.
